The 2026 quartz tariff, and a tariff free alternative

Since 15 August 2026, imported quartz surface products pay a US safeguard tariff of 25 percent inside a quarterly quota and 50 percent above it, stepping down over four years. Products of Mexico are excluded. Cultured marble vanity tops, shower walls and shower pans made in Monterrey, Mexico enter the United States with no tariffs.

What the safeguard is

Presidential Proclamation 11051, issued under Section 201 of the Trade Act, places a four year tariff rate quota on imported quartz surface products: slabs, countertops and vanity tops of engineered quartz. Imports inside the quarterly quota pay an extra 25 percent and imports above it an extra 50 percent in the first year.

Year 419%47%

Mexico is excluded

The proclamation excludes quartz surface products of Canada and Mexico, along with several other free trade partners, so product of Mexico neither pays the tariff nor counts toward the quota. The broader emergency tariffs imposed in 2025 under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act were ruled unlawful by the US Supreme Court on 20 February 2026.

What it means for a bathroom project

Quartz vanity tops imported from outside the exempt countries now carry a heavy added duty. Cultured marble tops from Monterrey avoid it: they are not quartz, they are made in Mexico, and they enter the United States with no tariffs. They are also cast in one piece with the bowl, so there is no separate sink to buy and fit.

Switching a specification

Most standard quartz vanity top sizes have a cultured marble equivalent: widths from 25 to 81 in at 19 or 22 in deep, single, double and offset double bowls, in finishes from solid white to veined Carrara.

Tariff rules change. Confirm classification and origin for your shipments with your customs broker.
